CRIMINALIZATION OF HOMELESSNESS

The notion that experiencing homelessness is a crime, or should be treated as one, has by no means resolved the nation-wide epidemic of homelessness in our country. On the contrary, punitive measures have served no productive purpose and only perpetuate the cycle of homelessness, as those who experience homelessness are not there by choice, but rather because of a lack of choices. Placing additional barriers in the way of escape, criminalization laws and policies make it more difficult for people experiencing homelessness to find employment, secure housing, financial stability and transition out of homelessness.
