TRADITIONAL PRACTICES

Around the world, traditional practices representing cultural values and beliefs have been passed down from generation to generation. However, some traditional practices have been found to be discriminatory, and even dangerous or life-threatening to women and girls. Various forms of gender-based violence can often-times be disguised under traditional practices, such as forced child marriage and early pregnancy, honor killings, and female genital mutilation (FGM). To achieve gender equality, women and girls everywhere must be protected and granted their equal rights to health, dignity, education, and bodily autonomy.
